Digital skills are a fundamental part of literacy and social inclusion processes, especially for those adult migrants with emergent literacy (LESLLA learners) for whom the integrated development of L2 literacy and basic digital skills are crucial. Migrant learners often rely on their smartphones to compensate for limited L2 comprehension and/or reading-writing skills, even though they are not always aware of how to make it an effective aid for L2 learning. The paper proposes a reflection on this issue by discussing the data collected in some Italian L2 pilot courses, in which digital tools were used to enhance adult migrants’ learning strategies, social autonomy and more motivating and collaborative learning of the target language. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data. The findings highlight that the integration of digital literacy into L2 learning may prove to be particularly effective in fostering a sense of well-being and participation among LESLLA learners, while also supporting the development of both direct and indirect language learning strategies.
