Evaluating the impact that university institutions and academic research have on societies and areas is a topic of public debate, both within and beyond Italy’s borders. Globalization, and the increased competitiveness in in- ternational markets have unbalanced educational and research systems toward the production and transmission of “useful knowledge”. Nevertheless, universities’ rootedness in their contexts historically represents a factor of community development in which the more territories become “cultural agents”, actively interacting with the instances emerging from university research. This paper aims to highlight how the adoption of the Anglo-Saxon model of the engaged campus across Europe, including in Italy, has determined the progressive repositioning of university “Third Mission” initiatives, moving them from the margins to the mainstream, integrating public service and community development into the traditional research and teaching functions of universities, through a constant dialogue and interaction between culture and society, tradition and innovation, local welfare and Eu- ropean research policies.
La valutazione dell’impatto che le università hanno sulle società e le economie territoriali è un tema al centro del dibattito pubblico, dentro e fuori i confini italiani. La globalizzazione e l’aumento della competitività degli Stati sui mercati internazionali hanno sbilanciato i sistemi formativi e di ricerca sulla produzione e la trasmissione di una “conoscenza utile”. Nondimeno, il radicamento degli Atenei nei contesti di appartenenza è, storicamente, un fattore di sviluppo comunitario quando i territori si fanno “agenti culturali”, interagendo con le istanze che emergono dalle ricerche universitarie. Il presente contributo intende sottolineare come l’adozione del modello anglosassone dell’engaged campus abbia determinato, anche in Italia, il progressivo “riposizionamento” delle iniziative di Terza Missione dai margini al mainstream, integrando, nelle tradizionali funzioni di ricerca e didattica, anche il servizio pubblico e il community development, in un dialogo costante fra cultura e società, tradizione e innovazione, welfare locale e politiche europee della ricerca.
