By analysing some studies and researches related to the field of gender studies, the paper proposes a reflection on the relationship between gender and language education, with particular reference to the learning and teaching of a second language in a migratory context. The main research trends and some key concepts developed within the feminist and critical approaches to language learning and teaching will be examined, highlighting their possible contributions to the Italian research in the field of language education. Drawing inspiration from a research experience on teaching Italian L2 to migrant women, some critical issues and research perspectives concerning the teaching of second languages will be discussed, underlining the specific contribution that a gender perspective can provide in interpreting sociolinguistic dynamics and learning processes in migratory contexts.
