The article examines the analysis of Nikolai Gogol's creative legacy performed by Lev Pumpyansky and Mikhail Bakhtin. It is focused on the general aspects of their reflections on the theory of laughter and the development of genres, connected with their common experience in Nevel (1919–1920), in the so-called Nevel school of philosophy.
