A thoughtful and balanced re-assessment of the principal characteristics defining the world of Dalmatian humanism is essential if we want to have a more nuanced and up-to-date picture of Renaissance humanism in Europe. Such a reappraisal also provides the opportunity to stress again the key point that the litterae which captivated the attention of the humanists concerned classical as well as modern traditions of learning. In this article I argue that scholars moving along and across the coasts of the Adriatic Sea were skilled traders in a large variety of multilingual knowledge, couched in Latin, ancient Greek, Slavic and Romance vernaculars. Focusing on specific examples of cultural exchanges between Italian and Croatian, I examine and re-examine various practices of humanist scholarship and knowledge dissemination such as manuscript production and circulation, evolving patterns of reading cultures and programmes of educational development. Finally, this article would like to be a call for a more inclusive, interdisciplinary and multilateral approach to the study of Dalmatian humanism.

Abstract
Finally, this article would like to be a call for a more inclusive, interdisciplinary and multilateral approach to the study of Dalmatian humanism.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
