The essay researchs both the end of signoria in Fermo by Rinaldo da Monteverde (†1380) and the distinctive features of his damnatio memorie. Rinaldo wasn’t seen by his coevals as a signore of his city, but as a ruthless commander of mercenary troops end an evil ‘tiranno’. So, the political hostility exhibited by the citizens of Fermo towards him, was expressed in many ways: in his ritual murder, in the exhibition of his image, held up in the public square to the public scorn, in the attribution of defamatory titles to him. In building Rinaldo’s damnata memoria the florentin humanist Coluccio Salutati contributed by describing him, in some official letters, as ‘the very wicked Nerone’. Therefore, the case of Rinaldo gains a particular value in the elaboration of a damnatio memorie of the signori in Italy in the late XIVth century.

Abstract
Therefore, the case of Rinaldo gains a particular value in the elaboration of a damnatio memorie of the signori in Italy in the late XIVth century.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
