Abstract

"Al-Saq `ala al-saq fi ma huwa al-Fary¡aq" by (Ahmad Faris al-Šidy¡aq is a trans-generic work. At the heart of this «shandyesque» narrative is the transformation of autobiography into fiction. This paper examines departure and travel in al-Saq each as a synecdoche of the mechanisms of the whole narration. The theme of departure is approached as a starting point for questioning the generic nature of the text. And the journey of both Fary¡aq and Fary¡aqiyya is analyzed as a trope of the narrative discourse in which we can retrace the inner evolution and the change of the two characters. The narrative culminates with a redefinition of the very concept of traveling in two significant ways: travel is an answer to the current circumstances and to the very development of subjectivity, as clarified by several declarations of the feminine character at the end of the book. By providing a survey of the structural, ideological and formal differences between the canonical European genre and the trans-generic al-Saq, I consider the weaknesses of some recent critical analyses of this work as a Bildungsroman tout court.
