The main actors in the political arena are organizations: political parties, interest groups, bureaucracies, parliaments, executives and international institutions. In spite of this conjunction, and with the exception of some outstanding exception, a fruitful cross fertilization between Political Science and Organization Theory is lacking. The only general theory of the political system giving major relevance to the organizational dimension is Samuel Huntington’s seminal contribution about the institutionalization of political organizations and procedures in developing countries. The aim of this article is to update Huntington’s analyisis, dating back to the mid ’60s, in order to assess whether it is valid also for contemporary political regimes which are under the threefold challenge of the deterritorialization of currency and financial markets, the strenghtening of technocracies. and the diffusion of digital technologies
