This article offers a rigorous reassessment of Minasola’s recent monograph on the so-called first triumvirate, arguing that its central claim – namely, the constitutional relevance of the pact between Caesar, Pompey and Crassus – rests on methodologically fragile foundations. While acknowledging the value of the author’s reconstruction of the 59 BCE legislation, the review contends that the book conflates political efficacy with constitutional transformation and employs the category of collegium more as a rhetorical device than as an analytical tool. The article highlights recurrent issues of anachronism, insufficient engagement with ancient evidence, and extensive self-reuse of previously published material. It concludes that the triumviral pact is better understood as a potent but informal societas potentiae rather than as a para-institutional structure capable of reshaping the republican constitution.

Abstract
It concludes that the triumviral pact is better understood as a potent but informal societas potentiae rather than as a para-institutional structure capable of reshaping the republican constitution.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
