In this note, the author defends the idea that the famous fire that kindles a light in the disciple’s soul (Pl. Ep. vii 341c-d) should be interpreted as part of the image of the disciple’s own intuition of truth, and not as an analogue of the teacher guiding the disciple towards truth. Furthermore, the author suggests the possibility of reading οἷον ἀπὸ πυρὸς πηδῆσαν ἐξαφθέντος φῶς instead of the transmitted οἷον ἀπὸ πυρὸς πηδήσαντος ἐξαφθὲν φῶς.
