The article commemorates the Italian classical philologist Giovanni Salanitro, a distinguished scholar of Greek and Latin language and literature. His research focused particularly on ancient Greek and Roman theatre, on early Latin poetry, on translations of Greek texts into Latin, on literary epigrams composed in both of these ancient languages, and on the Virgilian tradition in its direct and indirect manifestations. In addition to honouring Professor Salanitro’s memory, the article traces his academic career and scholarly contributions. It also critically engages with selected case studies from his work, reconsidering them in light of recent methodological developments and highlighting their lasting significance for both current and future research.
