The Representation of School in Pirandello’s Work · The essay undertakes an investigation into the representation of the school environment in Pirandello’s work and, by intersecting studies in the history of education, addresses a topic still rarely explored by critics. Through an incursion that crosses literary genres, it focuses on the novel L’esclusa, the play Pensaci, Giacomino!, and the short story collection Novelle per un anno. The exploration reveals a negative portrayal of the teaching profession, usually taken as a symbol of the “trap” that imprisons Pirandello’s characters: teachers and educators, forced into roles in which they do not recognize themselves and deprived of any social standing, find themselves imparting an abstract and useless form of knowledge, often contrasted by the author with authentic understanding.

Il saggio intraprende un’indagine sulla rappresentazione dell’universo scolastico nell’opera pirandelliana e, intersecando gli studi di storia dell’educazione, affronta un argomento ancora poco frequentato dalla critica ; con un’incursione che attraversa i generi letterari, si sofferma sul romanzo L’esclusa, sull’opera teatrale Pensaci, Giacomino ! e sulla raccolta delle Novelle per un anno. La ricognizione restituisce un’immagine negativa del mestiere del docente, di solito assunto a emblema della “trappola” che imprigiona le creature pirandelliane : maestri e insegnanti, costretti in un ruolo in cui non si riconoscono e privi di qualsiasi considerazione sociale, si trovano a impartire una cultura astratta e inutile, spesso dall’autore contrapposta al sapere autentico.
