This study examines the relationship between peace and truce by investigating the role of the preaching by the Observant friars in pace-making processes, conflict management and the promotion of social order in Umbria and Marche in the 15th century. The research analyses the interaction between people, the élite, political power and the friars, and highlights how the preaching was aimed at pacifying civil and factional violence. Specific cases relating to the apostolate of James of the Marches (Foligno, 1445; and Fermo, 1446) are used to explore the homiletic, ritual and symbolic strategies employed to re-establish civic harmony. The ephemeral nature of such pacifications is also discussed, as well as the devices deployed by the pulpit to protect their endurance. The research is based on analysing literary and archival sources, both published and unpublished, to reveal the “behind-the-scenes” dynamics of peacemaking interventions.
