The digital transformation and the environmental transition, the so-called twin transitions, represent priority and inseparable objectives of the European Union and its Member States to be pursued in the near future. The close connection between the digital transition and the environmental transition has been underlined in the Digital Compass 2030 and in the European Declaration on Digital Rights and Principles. First Next Generation EU, and the subsequent National Recovery and Resilience Plans (NRRPs) have confirmed the centrality of the two transitions to stimulate investment for recovery. As can be seen from reading these documents, however, the relationship between the digital transition and the environmental transition is a complex one: on the one hand, complementary and profitable, and on the other, conflicting. Having briefly outlined the context and the relationship between the two transitions, this paper intends to focus on the implications and effects that digitalisation can have on waste management. To this end, we will first take stock of the current situation and the recent changes in the acquisition and processing of information and data regarding waste management. After this initial analysis, we will move on to evaluating the possibility of using blockchain technology for the sector in question, which has already been used by some Italian municipalities. Some concluding remarks on the issues arising from the blockchain will follow.
