There are, as has been well known at least since the eighties, essential affinities between Kuhn and Wittgenstein. This paper focuses attention upon an affinity which brings to light an important theoretical tension in both authors, concerning the notion of paradigm and the historical character of the natural sciences. Kuhn’s and Wittgenstein’s notions of paradigm are based on a material, i.e. not purely functional concept, of a priori, which is the most profound reason both for Kuhn’s thesis of incommensurability and for the sudden and inexplicable conversion of scientists to a new and incommensurable paradigm. No substantial change is to be found in the late Kuhn on this point.
