The history of shorthand in modern Western Europe addresses the issue of rapid and accurate speech transcription before the advent of mechanical voice recording devices. Examining shorthand texts from the 17th to 19th centuries, this paper traces the development of stenography as a tool for faithfully representing spoken language and communication.
La storia della stenografia manuale nell’Europa occidentale moderna attesta l’istanza della trascrizione rapida ed esatta del parlato in assenza di dispositivi meccanici esterni per la registrazione della voce. Attraverso un excursus da testi di stenografia tra il XVII e il XIX secolo, il contributo segue lo sviluppo delle tesi sui sistemi tachigrafici quali strumenti di rappresentazione fedele ed efficace del discorso e della comunicazione parlata.
