An article on the Battle of Castro painting in the Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Rome. Our research has revealed its provenance, date and commissioner. It was attributed to Carlo Maratta and Jacques Courtois based on style and an 18th-century inventory, but a new attributional hypothesis allows us to refer the authorship of the figures at the top in the painting to the Bolognese painter Giovanni Andrea Sirani.
