The graphic work of the French architect Charles Percier, pensionnaire at the Académie de France in Rome, shows a strong interest in the Middle Ages. Although this aspect is well known, it has not yet been studied in depth. For this reason, the present article is intended to serve as a first moment of reflection and investigation, on the one hand to explore how Percier perceived and represented medieval architecture, and on the other to assess the reliability of his drawings as a record of a heritage that has since disappeared or been altered. The corpus proved to be a valuable resource, useful in highlighting, among other things, two different contexts between Italy and France. This essay presents a selection of examples, with particular reference to the sketches made during Percier’s stay in Rome between 1789 and 1791.
