The recent monograph on the Curia by the Old Forum at Lepcis Magna has contributed to add a “new”, sandstone Corinthian capital – actually, not totally unpublished – to the set of specimens already acknowledged in the early Imperial architecture of the city in local stones. Although it is very precariously preserved, its features seem to point in the direction of a strong adherence to the local tradition, well-marked by precise references to the Hellenistic and Alexandrian architectural lexicon. Differently from the editors’ conclusions, a reinterpretation of the available data allows to argue for a date between Tiberius and Claudius, thus enriching the picture of Lepcitan architectural decoration during the first half of the 1st c. AD.

Abstract
AD.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
