This paper explores the literary, epigraphic, documentary, and archaeological evidence for mobile stonemasons and carvers in the eastern Mediterranean during the early Byzantine period. It contextualizes skilled labour mobility within the political, social, and economic circumstances which shaped building activity in the 4th - early 7th c. AD. It places particular emphasis on three specific case-studies from Constantinople, Isauria, and the Limestone Massif of Syria.
