Paesaggi astronomici nelle Georgiche: Virgilio e i rapporti tra cielo e terra

Virgil's Georgics are sprinkled with references to the stars, which are interesting not only as an example of the beauty of nature, but above all because of their scientific value, based on Greek astronomy and useful for Italic agriculture. Moreover, the starry landscape appears to be involved, like the earth and the sea, in human life and Roman history, as shown by the catasterism of Caesar and the announcement of that of Octavian. Thus Virgil, like other poets and scholars, seems to want to contribute both to spreading astronomical notions in Rome and to forming a refined and self-confident collective identity, open to old and new relationships between heaven and earth in contemporary society, which are reflected in his didactic poem.

Le Georgiche di Virgilio sono cosparse di riferimenti agli astri, interessanti non solo come esempio della bellezza della natura, ma soprattutto per il loro valore scientifico, basato sull'astronomia greca e utile all'agricoltura italica. Inoltre, il paesaggio stellato appare coinvolto, come la terra e il mare, nella vita umana e nella storia romana, come dimostrano il catasterismo di Cesare e l'annuncio di quello di Ottaviano. Così Virgilio, come altri poeti e studiosi, sembra voler contribuire sia a diffondere nozioni astronomiche a Roma, sia a formare un'identità collettiva sensibile e consapevole dei rapporti antichi e nuovi tra cielo e terra nella società contemporanea, che si riflettono nel suo poema didascalico.
