This essay resumes the intense transnational debate between art historians on the methods, materials and goals of the teaching of Art History in the early decades of the 20th Century, which have been crucial years for the recognition of the discipline in the academic field. In particular, this study is about the international investigation published by the «Revue de synthèse historique» in 1914, on the Enseignement de l’Histoire de l’art, in which professors and museum directors from seven different countries were involved, such as August Schmarsow, Henry Focillon and Adolfo Venturi.
