Abstract

The history of shorthand in modern Western Europe shows the emergence of phonetic-based systems over verbal-visual ones for the representation of words as linguistic forms. This paper has as its object the shorthand work of John Willis, a pioneer of modern phonetic stenography, whose method employs logic and iconic graphic solutions against semantic and semiotic opacity, promoting short writing as a memory tool.
