This paper aims to deepen the articulations of the rich notion of σχολή, to be understood as free, liberated and liberating time. The σχολή, in fact, contrasts with the σχολία, as the “beauty” (καλόν) is opposed to the “necessary” (ἀναγκαῖον). On the other hand, the σχολή indicates a fruitful and productive time, to be used in the best possible way, which in no case must assume the guise of a time of disengagement and of absence of thought. Rather, it should be understood as a fundamental condition of possibility of the practical realization of a beautiful and good life.

Abstract

This paper aims to deepen the articulations of the rich notion of σχολή, to be understood as free, liberated and liberating time. The σχολή, in fact, contrasts with the σχολία, as the “beauty” (καλόν) is opposed to the “necessary” (ἀναγκαῖον). On the other hand, the σχολή indicates a fruitful and productive time, to be used in the best possible way, which in no case must assume the guise of a time of disengagement and of absence of thought. Rather, it should be understood as a fundamental condition of possibility of the practical realization of a beautiful and good life.
