This paper deals with an instructive example of documentary falsification con- cerning cities and their history in the Marche. Epigraphic forgeries, which normally appear on paper, are objects of invention. They propose the celebration of a city for its ancient origin, the historical events around it, the descent from illustrious Roman figures, and cel- ebrate local families, putting forward accounts of the origin of toponyms and institutions.
