Tamen

The paper analyzes, in a diachronic perspective, the semantic values of the Latin adversative-concessive connective tamen in the Italian prose, identifying two periods that correspond to two different uses. In the first period characterizing the ancient prose from southern Italy, tamen appears to be tied to familiarity with Latin. The phase is one of experimentation, where tamen takes on different meanings, sometimes diverging from the Latin ones, and shows inconsistent positioning in the sentence. In the second period, which goes from the end of the fifteenth century to the end of the sixteenth century, the connective becomes part of those traits that can be read either as features of chancery language or as routine Latinisms, belonging to a scriptural koinè featuring extensively in the treatises of that period.

Il contributo analizza in diacronia gli usi e i valori che il connettivo avversativo-concessivo latino tamen assume nella prosa italiana, individuando due periodi, corrispondenti a due diverse modalità d’impiego. Nel primo periodo, proprio della prosa antica, principalmente di area meridionale, tamen appare legato a una consuetudine con il latino; si colloca in una fase di sperimentazione, che vede tamen assumere diversi significati, a volte non coincidenti con l’uso che aveva nella lingua madre, e variare la sua posizione nella frase. Nel secondo periodo, che va dalla fine del Quattrocento alla fine del Cinquecento, il connettivo rientra tra quei tratti interpretabili come particolarismi cancellereschi o come latinismi di routine, appartenenti a una koinè scritturale molto diffusa nella trattatistica del tempo
