French violinist Jean-Luc Ponty is among those who have had the historical role of founding a stylistic and technical perspective for the violin, in the hybridization between the languages of jazz and rock. This essay retraces the process of his musical training by investigating the criteria through which he acquired a double acculturation: a visual one, within classical music, and an audiotactile one, within jazz. His piece “Renaissance” is then analyzed, both on a musical level and in the light of the problems of musical ontology that it raises. In fact, the concept of “work” in the musical ontology of modernity is anchored to that of “written composition”, whereas this unity is broken and diversified in the audiotactile ontology.
