“Inner areas” is an Italian concept that profoundly underscores the cultural identity of the nation’s territory and culture, and has been the object of increasing attention. In this scenario, the policies for the protection and enhancement of cultural heritage in inner areas have in recent years gained more and more importance. The survival of cultural heritage in disadvantaged inner areas – in many cases, mountain areas – is compromised and its sustainable management is a complex and transdisciplinary issue requiring a multi- and interdisciplinary approach and a fruitful collaboration between scholars and policy-makers.
