In 1636 Campanella published in Paris De gentilismo non retinendo («That We Should Let Paganism Go»), written originally in 1609, then reprinted as Disputatio in prologum instauratarum scientiarum (1637), as a general introduction to his philosophical summa, the Philosophia realis (1637). The Disputatio was supposed to function as an overture discussing the place of human culture within the universal system of knowledge. Some historical figures played the role of the villains: the Antichrist, and three powerful emissaries – Averroism, Machiavellianism and Lutheranism – i.e., three cultural forces resulting from a perverted use of human reason, turned from being a vital power into an instrumental and homogeneizing mechanism, whose final end was the impersonal and deterministic administration of reality. This article focuses on the way in which Campanella rewrote the history of Western philosophy to adapt that narrative to his cosmological and eschatological agenda.
