Audiovisual texts are part of our everyday life and an essential element of contemporary communication. For this reason, audiovisual translation is gaining increasing prominence in university translation courses. This paper deals with a particular type of audiovisual translation known as interlingual subtitling and looks at it from a didactic perspective. First the competences required to subtitle effectively are discussed. Then a didactic model that takes account of the complexity of the subtitling process is suggested and illustrated by an example.
