ABSTRACT: On the base of a rich and unpublished archival documentation, the article retraces the steps of the project to federate the universities of ancient tradition (Macerata, Camerino, Urbino) in the Marche Region, a project which was elaborated in 1919 by the Rector of the Free University of Camerino Giovanni Gallerani in order to cope not only with the increasing shortage of financial resources, but also with the demand of a general reorganization of the State, the public administration as well as of the school and university system in Italy in the aftermath of the First World War.
