The aim of my article is to challenge an idea that has become commonplace in Aesthetics and Literary Theory: the idea according to which the individual is the proper object of the novel. Undoubtedly, in modern Aesthetics, there is a tendency to confer on art in general with the function of expressing the individual. Is the novel completely integrated within this tendency? Are there any features the need to be taken into account? My thesis is that the object of the novel is not so much the concrete historical individual as something which is closer to the abstract domain of philosophical concepts. This will be argued through the analysis of some cases study (Stendhal, Balzac, Musil) and by using the specific viewpoint provided by the notion of character.
