Eddie South is considered the most important jazz violinist of the first half of XX century. In this article we highlight the characteristics of his style and of his identity as an artist, especially in relation to the character of the “Black Gypsy” with which it represented himself. The analytical corpus is given by the historical recordings made in Paris in 1937 with Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, two pieces of which are here transcribed in full score: the first chorus of Eddie's Blues and of Sweet Georgia Brown. The discussion then problematizes the concept of formula, distinguishing the use and meaning in research on oral cultures and in the audiotactiles ones, and raises some issues of transcription methodology, comparing our version of Eddie's Blues with the Hanno Grasser’s reference transcription, in an exercise of philology of audiotactile musics.

Abstract
Eddie South is considered the most important jazz violinist of the first half of XX century. In this article we highlight the characteristics of his style and of his identity as an artist, especially in relation to the character of the “Black Gypsy” with which it represented himself. The analytical corpus is given by the historical recordings made in Paris in 1937 with Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, two pieces of which are here transcribed in full score: the first chorus of Eddie's Blues and of Sweet Georgia Brown. The discussion then problematizes the concept of formula, distinguishing the use and meaning in research on oral cultures and in the audiotactiles ones, and raises some issues of transcription methodology, comparing our version of Eddie's Blues with the Hanno Grasser’s reference transcription, in an exercise of philology of audiotactile musics.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
