Francesco Filelfo’s translation of the Rhetorica ad Alexandrum represents the first ancient Greek rhetorical treatise translated in the 15th century. He most probably based his translation on the Laurentianus 60, 18, regarded as the best manuscript of the recensio a. In his translation, Filelfo worked hard to find accurate Latin equivalents for Greek rhetorical terms. In comparison with the medieval Latin versions (translatio vaticana, translatio americana), Filelfo’s translation demonstrates a new and incisive way of translating, and more ambitious aims: in the preface to his translation, Filelfo claims to have departed from Quintilian when translating certain rhetorical terms, and to have done so intentionally.
