Abstract: The comparison of the Indian history of Urvaśī and Purūravas (as transmitted firstly in R̥gvedasaṁhitā X, 95, then in other Vedic texts, among which the Śatapatha brāhmaṇa, the Baudhāyanaśrautasūtra and the Vādhūlānvākhyāna are the principal ones, as well as in the post-Vedic tradition) with the Greek saga of Peleus and Thetis and the Irish saga of the Tochmarc Étaíne (the latter particularly emphasized in this article) makes it possible to suppose the existence of a narrative complex of Indo-European origin, from which these traditions descend. Many common features are collected here in detail; the attention is focussed in particular on the aspects concerned with the fate of man after his death. With regard to these aspects, while the Tochmarc Étaíne is an important piece of evidence for the transmigration of the souls in the Celtic domain, the discourse on death and survival in R̥gvedasaṁhitā X, 95 remains still outside the horizon of the classical saṁsāra. An historical explanation of that is proposed.
