The following bibliography includes more than eight hundred titles of essays and monographs on musical improvisation. They mainly refer to pedagogy, aesthetics cognitive science, psychology, historical musicology and African-American musicology. Such bibliography does not take into account any didactic manuals nor historical ancient woks, but focuses on books that dealt with musical improvisation from a speculative perspective. The listed texts are listed into four groups according to the different disciplines they belong to. 1. Psychology, pedagogy, cognitive science, improvisational aesthetics. 2. Improvisation in ethno-musicological studies. 3. Improvisation in Western art music. 4. Improvisation in African-American music.
