In the essay I foreground the role of the translator as an individual reader and a mediator in a cultural process. Drawing my examples from on my own translation of H.D.’s epic Trilogy, I show how the translated text, on the one hand conveys to its readers both the author’s and the translator’s illocutionary acts, and on the other not only contributes to the continuing life of the text, but has the potential to trigger new creative texts, as well as new critical and cultural responses, in a process that ensures the circulation of culture, and thus contributes to cultural opening, innovation, transformation, hybridization.

Abstract

In the essay I foreground the role of the translator as an individual reader and a mediator in a cultural process. Drawing my examples from on my own translation of H.D.’s epic Trilogy, I show how the translated text, on the one hand conveys to its readers both the author’s and the translator’s illocutionary acts, and on the other not only contributes to the continuing life of the text, but has the potential to trigger new creative texts, as well as new critical and cultural responses, in a process that ensures the circulation of culture, and thus contributes to cultural opening, innovation, transformation, hybridization.
