Abstract

Catania, in Sicily, is a city in transformation. In Catania, the traditional forms of trade are anchored in outdated patterns. They still continue to play an important role, even if they are threatened by the forcible spread of modern retailing in the territory. Outside the historic centre, many shopping malls have sprung up since the 1980s. The present work offers an overview of the phenomenon and offers suggestions about its evolution in the coming years.
