Many accomplishments have been ascribed to the philosophical brilliance of Max Scheler. However the attention Scheler devoted to the theme of work has gone almost unnoticed: only Marcuse gives a bit of price to his “Arbeit und Ethik”! Actually, Scheler devoted a full trilogy to the theme of work, systematically exploring the essential and historical levels, that meet in the intervieawing of living experiences a co-mingling that gives substance to the word “work”. The resultant description of active working being opens for Scheler the prospect of a reform in the dynamic sense of traditional metaphysics. According to the new approach made possible by the philosophical use of work, it is no longer necessary to take on a monistic metaphysics in order to avoid contradictions in the absolute. In fact it is enough that the metaphysical elements indentified be susceptible to reciprocal interpenetration, since work activity as much connected to inanimate being as to pulsional and spiritual living being, will be what effectively brings about their unification.
