New technologies, which give disproportionate power to those who can afford so- phisticated targeting technologies or exploit the biases of platforms, can generate disinfor- mation and steer political debate. Therefore, democracy within Europe could be jeopardised. The Chapter aims to clarify whether the current European legal framework, in particular the DSA and the PAR, is effective in protecting citizens from political microtargeting, disinformation and online manipulation, and in safeguarding democracy in Europe.
