This paper examines the account on the competition between Arachne and Athena in Ov. met. VI, 1-145. Through the technique of ekphrasis Ovid describes the iconographic subjects woven by the two contenders in a very precise technical language and with extremely specific references: the visual evocation sheds light on the stages of wool and fabric processing, the technique employed, and the organization of the work.
