Antigiudaismo e filoebraismo nelle Marche del Quattrocento. Carlo Crivelli, i francescani e gli ebrei

The essay does not neglect the analysis of numerous symbolic elements present in the paintings that are examined, but it is focused on how Carlo Crivelli deals with the Jewish question in two works of art ordered in the Franciscan context by two lay patrons. The polyptych of Massa Fermana, signed and dated 1468, is commissioned by Troilo Azzolino who, for the definition of the iconographic program, seems to rely on an observant theologian. The altarpiece by Fabriano, signed and dated 1491, was requested by Oradea Becchetti for the local Franciscan conventual church. In the fi rst work we note a strong anti-Judaism, which is expressed through the two compartments of the predella with the Flagellation and the Crucifixion. On the contrary in the second image, it is possible to intuit an interest in or a fascination for the Jewish culture, which is manifested through the position of the hands of the Virgin and Child. In effect they seem to reproduce the gesture of the Jewish priestly blessing.

Senza trascurare l’analisi dei numerosi elementi simbolici presenti nei dipinti esaminati, il saggio indaga in particolare come Carlo Crivelli affronta la questione ebraica in due opere ordinate in ambito francescano da due committenti laici: il polittico di Massa Fermana, firmato e datato 1468, viene ordinato da Troilo Azzolino che, per la definizione del programma iconografi co, sembra affidarsi a un teologo osservante, mentre la pala di Fabriano, firmata e datata 1491, viene richiesta da Oradea Becchetti per la locale chiesa francescana conventuale. Nella prima si nota un acceso antigiudaismo, che si esprime soprattutto attraverso i due scomparti di predella con la Flagellazione e la Crocefissione, mentre nella seconda è possibile intuire un interesse e una fascinazione per la cultura ebraica, che si manifesta attraverso la posizione delle mani della Vergine e del Bambino, che sembrano riprodurre il gesto della benedizione sacerdotale ebraica.
