The paper explores the burial customs of mainland Greece as a key to understanding the Christianization processes in the region between the 4th and the 6th centuries. To this aim, it will examine not only the principal characteristics of burials in churches (their typology, the materials used, their placing within and with respect to the cult buildings), but also, primarily through the evidence of inscriptions, what kind of persons merited this privilege. The research will cover both urban and rural contexts in order to provide the fullest possible picture of the spread of Christianity in early Byzantine Greece and its institutional consolidation.

Abstract
The paper explores the burial customs of mainland Greece as a key to understanding the Christianization processes in the region between the 4th and the 6th centuries. To this aim, it will examine not only the principal characteristics of burials in churches (their typology, the materials used, their placing within and with respect to the cult buildings), but also, primarily through the evidence of inscriptions, what kind of persons merited this privilege. The research will cover both urban and rural contexts in order to provide the fullest possible picture of the spread of Christianity in early Byzantine Greece and its institutional consolidation.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
