The ideas of translator’s visibility and invisibility are linked to those of domestication and foreignization in translation (Venuti 1995, 2008, 2017). This contribution relates these concepts to audiovisual translation discussing the characteristics of subtitling, due to the multimodal nature of audiovisual texts and to technical constraints which reduce the subtitler’s leeway. Examples of transfer from German to Italian of sociolinguistic and pragmatic elements will be also discussed.
