Many of Giles of Rome's arguments in Contra exemptos are rooted in an ecclesiology inspired by Ps. Dionysios' Angelic Hierarchy. This article analyses how Giles argues that church and society mirror, or better should imitate the order of the angelic hierarchies. On such assumptions he criticises the institution of ecclesiastical exemption, which,in his opinion, is the principal cause of the wrongdoings and heresies of the Knights Templar. Jacques de Thérines, a member of an exempt Order himself (Cistecians), counters Giles's attecks, showing that the model of the Angelic Hirarcjhies can be interpreted i different, divergent ways
