This book explores the role of the European Union plant variety rights system, established by Council Regulation (EC) No 2100/94, in fostering - or restraining - the breeding of new varieties suitable for urban agriculture. Innovation in urban agriculture is much-needed but plant breeding has a limited capacity to address all environments and farming system. Therefore it has to be encouraged, inter alia, by providing a favourable legal framework. This publication will give readers central information on the phenomenon of urban agriculture and it will address the most critical provisions of the sui generis variety protection system, at the international and European level.
