Tra prescritto e vissuto. Riflessioni sulla tutela del patrimonio storico-artistico nello Stato Pontificio tra XVIII e XIX secolo

Legislation issued in the Papal States in the field of the fine arts focused on the need to regulate and reduce the continuous dispersion of artistic heritage, an issue that became more and more pressing with the expansion and differentiation of the art market due to the growing number of travellers visiting the eternal city during the Grand Tour. This essay proposes some reflections on the exportations of works of art between norm and practice, and on the complex relationship between protection and artistic promotion in the Papal States in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century.

La legislazione in materia di belle arti emanata nello Stato Pontificio si concentrava sulla necessità di regolamentare e ridurre la continua dispersione del patrimonio artistico, questione che si faceva sempre più pressante con l'espansione e la differenziazione del mercato dell'arte dovuta al crescente numero di viaggiatori che visitavano la città eterna all’epoca del Grand Tour. Questo saggio propone alcune riflessioni sulle esportazioni di opere d'arte tra norma e prassi, e sul complesso rapporto tra tutela dell’arte del passato e promozione dell’arte contemporanea nello Stato Pontificio tra fine Settecento e inizio Ottocento.
