Abstract The present volume arises from a didactic and research need and is a new edition, completely revised in all its parts, and updated with new chapters, of the previous monograph I falsi amici: un confronto contrastivo spagnolo/italiano, also published by Solfanelli. In this new version, more attention has been paid to the problems of Spanish/Italian translation and to the differences between the two languages in the context of their historical evolution. As far as translation is concerned, the final chapter discusses translation methods with examples taken from important Spanish literary texts translated into Italian, while the second chapter, "La traduzione dei caratteri fonosimbolici del linguaggio" ("The translation of the phonosymbolic characters of language"), investigates an aspect that is not widely studied in translation studies, but is of fundamental importance especially for literary translation. Chapter fifteen also deals with a contrastive theme, “La dislocazione nella sintassi spagnola ed italiana: aspetti testuali e traduttivi” (“Dislocation in Spanish and Italian syntax: textual and translational aspects”), on which there is no substantial bibliography, despite the fact that in both Italian and Spanish dislocation appears from the earliest linguistic evidence. The twelfth chapter on “Phraseology” is a deepening of the knowledge of Spanish language and of the secular civilisation of which it has been an expression. In fact, both the learner and the researcher will find useful the investigations on collocations, proverbs and refranes and their equivalents in Italian in order to develop that contrastive “consciousness” which is indispensable in any approach of study between similar languages (it is, moreover, an original approach if we consider that a phraseology of the Italian language is still in a phase of development, and consequently a phraseological typology as in Spanish has not yet been consolidated). Finally, it is necessary to add that the topics presented in this new monograph reflect the research that in recent years has been increasing in the disciplinary sector L-LIN/07, Lengua y Traducción – Lengua española.
