Blue Etude 2 is the recording of an improvisation performance in piano duo, from a concert held on April 15, 2013 by two of the most representative Italian jazz pianists, Enrico Intra and Enrico Pieranunzi. Starting from a brief cue, the musicians have produced an instantaneous creation freed from pre-established metric, harmonic, or generally formal schemes, in an exciting example of contemporary improvisation. For this critical edition, the piece has been fully transcribed in notation and analysed by Vincenzo Caporaletti, complemented by the biographical-critical excursus of Ludovic Florin and Maurizio Franco on the two musicians. «Caporaletti analyzes this performance using the Audiotactile Theory, and this results in some deep insights into the music, that can also be applied to other jazz performances. Also, he presents a transcription of the entire 4-minute recording, which provides a model of how free jazz can be transcribed for the purposes of analysis». (Lewis Porter)
