Mediating narratives of migration

Translating and interpreting narratives of migration as told by migrants as well as reporting (about) such narratives in the mass media entail the (re)construction and transformation of these narratives. These all influence not only the policies of social inclusion and community cohesion but also the representations of “self” and “other”. The aim of this special issue is to explore precisely the role of language, translation and interpreting in constructing narratives of migration. The papers address the topic from various perspectives, and apply a variety of methods to their data. They address questions such as: What factors influence the construction of narratives in interpreter-mediated events? How are narratives (re/de)constructed and transformed in processes of translation and interpreting, and in media reports? How do the narratives which are (re/de)constructed influence the representations of ‘self’ and ‘other’? What are the implications of rendering narratives of migration for translators and interpreters in respect of professional ethics? What policies are in place to use (or reject) translation and interpreting that would engage with narratives of migration?
